Special Considerations

Kimmei Buddha Belly Bamboo is sensitive to cold temperatures. While this variety has occasionally been reported to survive temperatures down into the teens, it is strongly recommended that it be planted in regions where winter temperatures do not fall below 21°F.

It has also been reported to survive in Zone 8a, but extra protection is usually required. In colder regions, plants may benefit from winter protection such as mulching, covering during cold snaps, or rotating container plants indoors to ensure their survival.

Yellow Buddha Belly Bamboo – Bambusa vulgaris ‘Vittata Wamin’

Yellow Buddha Belly Bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris ‘Vittata Wamin’) is a distinctive ornamental bamboo known for its swollen “belly” nodes and striking golden-yellow canes accented with green striping. The colorful culms and unique shape make this bamboo an eye-catching feature in tropical landscapes.

This clumping bamboo stays relatively compact compared to larger hedge varieties, making it well suited for decorative hedges, landscape accents, and large containers. With proper sunlight and growing conditions, the canes develop the signature bulging nodes that give Buddha Belly Bamboo its name.

Like all bamboo we offer, Yellow Buddha Belly Bamboo is a non-invasive clumping bamboo. It expands gradually from the base rather than spreading aggressively through underground runners, making it manageable for residential landscapes.

Best Uses

  • Decorative hedges and garden accents
  • Tropical landscape focal points
  • Container bamboo for patios and courtyards
  • Unique architectural bamboo displays

Plant several together in a row for a decorative hedge or use them individually as standout tropical accents in the landscape.

Planting Bamboo Successfully

Planting bamboo is simple and usually takes only a few minutes. Our plants ship in well-rooted containers, so installation requires minimal digging and they establish quickly.

Start by digging a hole slightly larger than the root ball and loosening the surrounding soil so roots can expand easily.

Mix compost or organic material into the soil if available. Bamboo prefers soil that holds moisture while still draining well.

Set the plant at the same depth it was growing in the container, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Keep the root ball consistently moist for the first few weeks while the plant establishes.

With proper watering and nutrition, bamboo establishes quickly and begins filling in as the root system expands.

Feed Your Bamboo for Stronger, Fuller Growth

If your bamboo hedge looks thin, slow to fill in, or uneven, the issue is usually nutrition. Bamboo grows best when it receives steady feeding and healthy soil conditions.

Our Bamboo Care Bundle combines a slow-release fertilizer with Recharge, a microbial soil conditioner that helps roots absorb nutrients more efficiently.

Together they support thicker canes, greener foliage, and faster fill-in for privacy screens.

  • One annual fertilizer feeding
  • Weekly soil support with Recharge
  • Designed specifically for bamboo

FAQs

All bamboo plants we sell are clumping bamboo, not running bamboo.
