Emerald Bamboo – Tall Clumping Hedge Bamboo

Emerald Bamboo (Bambusa textilis ‘Mutabilis’) is a tall clumping bamboo valued for its clean, upright growth and dense green foliage. This variety forms a refined hedge that works well for privacy screens, property borders, and tropical landscape design.

As the plant matures, the canes develop a deep emerald-green color that gives this bamboo its name. The vertical growth habit allows it to create a strong visual screen while maintaining a graceful, structured appearance in the landscape.

Like all bamboo we offer, Emerald Bamboo is a non-invasive clumping bamboo. It expands gradually from the base rather than spreading aggressively through underground runners, making it well suited for residential landscapes.

Planting Bamboo Successfully

Planting bamboo is simple and usually takes only a few minutes. Our plants ship in well-rooted containers, so installation requires minimal digging and they establish quickly.

Start by digging a hole slightly larger than the root ball and loosening the surrounding soil so roots can expand easily.

Mix compost or organic material into the soil if available. Bamboo prefers soil that holds moisture while still draining well.

Set the plant at the same depth it was growing in the container, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Keep the root ball consistently moist for the first few weeks while the plant establishes.

With proper watering and nutrition, bamboo establishes quickly and begins filling in as the root system expands.

Feed Your Bamboo for Stronger, Fuller Growth

If your bamboo hedge looks thin, slow to fill in, or uneven, the issue is usually nutrition. Bamboo grows best when it receives steady feeding and healthy soil conditions.

Our Bamboo Care Bundle combines a slow-release fertilizer with Recharge, a microbial soil conditioner that helps roots absorb nutrients more efficiently.

Together they support thicker canes, greener foliage, and faster fill-in for privacy screens.

  • One annual fertilizer feeding
  • Weekly soil support with Recharge
